Tell if a player is on a path

So I have a level with a path made out, but I don't know how to tell if the player is on the path. I could use a collider as a trigger on a player, but I'm not too experienced with triggers, and I don't know if that would work. Its not a straight path, so one collider wouldn't work. I'm not asking for code, just the best way to go about doing this. Thanks in advance
